RECOGNIZING THE HAWAII LUPUS FOUNDATION ON ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY AND ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS; SHARLEEN OSHIRO, ED KAJIYAMA, DEAN YAMAMOTO, TRACY OKUBO, AND AMY LEONG.
WHEREAS, 1.4 million Americans have been diagnosed and many more undiagnosed with Lupus; and
WHEREAS, 1 out of every 185 individuals has lupus; and
WHEREAS, there are about 7,000 people living in Hawaii diagnosed with lupus, making it a state concern; and
WHEREAS, women between the ages of 14-45 are nine times more likely to contract lupus than men; and
WHEREAS, the cause is unknown and although considered to be a treatable disease there is no cure; and
WHEREAS, more people have Lupus then AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis combined; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Lupus Foundation's mission is to "support those affected by lupus, create awareness, and find a cure"; and
WHEREAS, the Lupus Foundation of America is the nation's leading non-profit voluntary health organization dedicated to improving diagnosis and treatment of lupus; and
WHEREAS, there is a support group comprised of patients, their families, and friends who meet regularly to share concerns and experiences, to gain a better understanding of Lupus as well as learning to cope with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus; and
WHEREAS, Sharleen Oshiro, Ed Kajiyama, Dean Yamamoto, Amy Leong and Tracy Okubo have contributed greatly to this cause; and
WHEREAS, The Hawaii Lupus Foundation is celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year; and
WHEREAS, April 1, 2004 is National Lupus Alert day; and
WHEREAS, these individuals have given up their time and effort to the Hawaii Lupus Foundation; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004,
that this body hereby applauds and commends Sharleen Oshiro, Ed Kajiyama, Dean Yamamoto, Tracy Okubo, and Amy Leong of the Hawaii Lupus Foundation for their contributions.
