congratulating the gas company on the celebrated occasion of its one hundredth anniversary.
WHEREAS, the vitality of the state depends upon the reliable supply and delivery of synthetic natural gas and propane for hotels, restaurants, food manufacturers, laundries, and homes; and
WHEREAS, in April 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the gas franchise that led to the founding of the Honolulu Gas Company, Limited, now known as The Gas Company; and
WHEREAS, The Gas Company began operations on May 14, 1905, serving 250 customers in the downtown Honolulu area with 12˝ miles of pipeline; and
WHEREAS, over the last 100 years The Gas Company has grown together with the Hawaii community, experienced two world wars, statehood, natural disasters, and the emergence of Hawaii as a premier visitor destination area, and throughout this time has gained a reputation as a reliable provider of gas energy for cooking, water heating, clothes drying, fuel for vehicles, cogeneration, gas lighting, and tiki torches; and
WHEREAS, The Gas Company has grown to serve over 67,000 customers today on Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai, and is served by over 300 employees and more than 1,000 miles of gas pipelines; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to meet the changing needs of homes and businesses statewide, The Gas Company’s products and services have expanded to include synthetic natural gas, propane, appliance servicing, and converting vehicles to run on propane; and
WHEREAS, gas is now the preferred fuel for windproof tiki torches, which were invented by company employees in 1950 and today are an integral part of island gatherings, as well as a symbol of both Hawaii and The Gas Company; and
WHEREAS, over the last century, The Gas Company has had various owners and is currently owned by k1 Ventures, Limited, a diversified investment company that is incorporated and publicly traded on the Singapore stock exchange; and
WHEREAS, the company’s name has evolved over the last 100 years from Honolulu Gas Company, to Gasco Inc., to The Gas Company, as it is known today, and throughout these changes the company’s commitment to providing clean, reliable gas energy has been steadfast; and
WHEREAS, throughout these transitions, The Gas Company remains a kamaaina company with an understanding and knowledge of Hawaii, its people, and its culture, and is both poised and committed to working with the community and its customers to help transition Hawaii into the hydrogen economy; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby recognizes the achievements of The Gas Company, congratulates The Gas Company on its 100th anniversary of providing clean gas energy to homes and businesses statewide, and extends its best wishes for continued success.
