RECOGNIZING AND HONORING GENERAL ERIC K. SHINSEKI FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AND SERVICE TO THIS STATE AND NATION.
WHEREAS, on June 11, 2003, GENERAL ERIC K. SHINSEKI ended one of the most distinguished military careers ever served by a son of Hawaii by simply stating: "I am ERIC SHINSEKI, and I am a soldier"; and
WHEREAS, when GENERAL SHINSEKI was appointed as Chief of Staff of the United States Army on June 22, 1999, he was only the thirty-fourth individual to achieve that high appointment, including such notables as John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar N. Bradley, and Matthew B. Ridgway; and
WHEREAS, service as the Chief of Staff was GENERAL SHINSEKI's last tour of duty in a career that included graduation from West Point, two combat tours in Vietnam where he suffered the loss of a foot that would have ended the career of someone less courageous, a variety of command and staff positions in Europe, Hawaii, Texas, and the Pentagon, and command of the United States Army, Europe as well as the Stabilization force in Bosnia-Herzegovina; and
WHEREAS, as Army Chief of Staff, GENERAL SHINSEKI set forth a vision to transform the Army through development of medium-weight combat forces capable of rapid deployment yet able to withstand significant combat action, and steadfastly acted on his belief that soldiers have a responsibility to give clear and professional advice to civilian leaders--advice which often has proven prescient; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby honors GENERAL ERIC K. SHINSEKI for his distinguished career and service to this nation, the honor he brings to the State of Hawaii, for his visionary leadership, for the courage of his convictions, and most of all, because he is a soldier. Hooah.
