HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION OF HAWAII TO EXPLORE HOME OWNERSHIP OPTIONS AND STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING A HOUSING DEMONSTRATION PROJECT AT HAUIKI HOMES AND OTHER STATE-OWNED AND OPERATED HOUSING PROJECTS.

 

 

WHEREAS, there are forty-six state-owned and operated public housing units in Hauiki Homes; and

WHEREAS, residents in Hauiki Homes have a strong resident association that has implemented significant programs of benefit to the community; and

WHEREAS, the Honolulu Police Department recently reported that there is less crime in the housing neighborhood than there is in the surrounding neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, residents do not want Hauiki Homes to be sold to private companies and have initiated discussions with Kokua Legal Services, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Kokua Legal Services, Inc. is willing to work with the residents of Hauiki Homes and with the Housing and Community Development Corporation to work towards assuring permanent housing affordability at Hauiki Homes; and

WHEREAS, the spirit of sharing and ohana is very strong within Hauiki Homes and will serve as the foundation for a successful project; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that the Housing and Community Development Corporation is requested to explore home ownership options and study the feasibility of implementing a housing demonstration project at Hauiki Homes and other state-owned and operated housing projects; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Corporation is requested to report its findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii, the President of the Kokua Legal Services, Inc., and the Chairperson of the Hauiki Homes Residents Council.
