HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

urging the support of deployed hawaii national guard and military reservists through economic relief measures.

 

WHEREAS, recent events in Iraq and Afghanistan have caused the deployment of Hawaii-based National Guardsmen and military reservists, many of whom, although ready and willing to serve their country, were in the midst of living their personal lives; and

WHEREAS, the State's National Guard, as of September 30, 2002, is composed of 5,334 Army and Air National Guard members; and

WHEREAS, the State's military reserves, as of September 30, 2002, is composed of 9,108 members; and

WHEREAS, although these combined figures do not represent a significant percentage of the State's overall population, the members of Hawaii's National Guard and military reserves are charged, in significant part, with the responsibility of protecting our State and nation's interests both here and abroad; and

WHEREAS, in this time of heightened national security and increased pressure on not only active duty United States military forces, but also our National Guardsmen and military reserves to ensure the safety of United States citizens and citizens of foreign countries, the State, its residents, and businesses should vigorously support Hawaii-based National Guardsmen and military reservists who are called to active duty to assist in these efforts; and

WHEREAS, many National Guardsmen and military reservists have paid deposits for goods or services, such as venues and accommodations for weddings, for which they may not be able to receive the benefits due to their deployment; and

WHEREAS, the people and businesses of Hawaii should support their fellow citizens who proudly serve in the National Guard or military reserve as these volunteers are deployed to carry out their appointed duty in times of war and increased terrorist threats with compassion for the circumstances facing our National Guardsmen and military reservists; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the Senate concurring, that the people and businesses of Hawaii are urged to recognize the sacrifices being made by the Hawaii-based National Guardsmen and military reservists as they are deployed on active duty; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that state government and business leaders are encouraged to return deposits for goods or services and otherwise financially accommodate the needs of deployed Hawaii National Guardsmen and military reservists to the extent practicable; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; the Mayor and the Chairperson of the Council of each County; Commander of the United States Pacific Command; the Adjutant General and Director of Civil Defense; senior military commanders in Hawaii; members of Hawaii's congressional delegation; Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; Hawaii Business Roundtable; Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau; Visitors Bureaus for Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Big Island; Hawaii Hotel Association; Maui Hotel Association; Retail Merchants of Hawaii; Hawaii Attractions Association; and The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and its affiliated Chambers.
