HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

supporting the hawaii medical association, the hawaii psychiatric medical association, and the american psychiatric association in extending an invitation to the american medical association house of delegates to return to honolulu, hawaii for its interim winter meeting in 2007 or 2008.

 

 

WHEREAS, the American Medical Association is an organization comprising 250,000 physicians; and

WHEREAS, the American Medical Association has a deliberative body of four thousand delegates and alternates called the House of Delegates that has held its annual conference in Hawaii every five years for many years; and

WHEREAS, the American Medical Association met in Hawaii in 1998 and when it considered removing Hawaii from its convention rotation in 1999, a delegation of the American Psychiatric Association played a key role in successfully persuading the American Medical Association to retain Hawaii as the site of the 2003 American Medical Association conference; and

WHEREAS, in 2002, members of the Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association, working with the State's congressional delegation, the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, and the Legislature, were able to persuade the American Psychiatric Association to bring its own annual convention to Hawaii in 2011, which is projected to generate $51,000,000 in visitor spending and $4,000,000 in tax revenues; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii offers an ideal site for the American Medical Association conference in that it provides a unique combination of superior facilities at a new, world class Convention Center, 36,000 hotel rooms within one mile, world class restaurants, convenient airport access, and sophisticated convention support services; and

WHEREAS, despite the wealth of extra-convention activities, Hawaii is developing a reputation as a serious place to conduct business; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature supports the Hawaii Medical Association, the Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association, and the American Psychiatric Association in extending an invitation to the American Medical Association House of Delegates to return to Honolulu, Hawaii for its interim winter meeting in 2007 or 2008; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the American Medical Association, the President of the Hawaii Psychiatric Medical Association, the President of the Hawaii Medical Association, the Executive Director of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and the President of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.
