HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

supporting and encouraging national, state and local efforts to secure access and remove barriers to healthcare for men and their family members.

 

WHEREAS, despite advances in medical technology and research, men continue to live an average of six years less than women, with African-American men having the lowest life expectancy; and

WHEREAS, educating the public and health care providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of male health problems will result in reducing rates of mortality from disease; and

WHEREAS, men who are educated about the value of preventative health will be more likely to participate in health screening; and

WHEREAS, the Men's Health network worked with Congress to develop National Men's Health Week as a special campaign to help educate men and their families about the importance of positive health attitudes and preventative health practices; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii Men's Health Week will focus on a broad range of men's health issues, including heart disease; diabetes; prostate, testicular and colon cancer; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of this state are encouraged to increase their awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and medical check-ups; and

WHEREAS, the Governor issued a proclamation on March 2, 2004, declaring June 14 through 20, 2004, to be Men's Health Week; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the Senate concurring, that the legislature hereby acknowledges the importance of men's health activities so that existing government health networks can be utilized to increase the health and well being of men; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature supports and encourages national, state and local efforts to secure access and remove barriers to healthcare for men and their family members; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the director of the Department of Health and the Governor.
