HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING AND GENERAL SERVICES TO CONDUCT A STUDY on THE COST OF MAINTAINING ALOHA STADIUM.

 

WHEREAS, the Aloha Stadium (Stadium) in Halawa was built in 1975 and has served the general public for 29 years; and

WHEREAS, during those 29 years, the Stadium staff has provided the necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure a facility that is safe and comfortable for local sports fans; and

WHEREAS, the repair and maintenance of the Stadium addressed various problems, including concerns with the corten steel used in the initial construction of the Stadium; and

WHEREAS, that problem was addressed during a major overhaul of the Stadium from 1989 to 1995 that cost the State approximately $88,000,000; and

WHEREAS, another anticipated maintenance cost concerns the replacement of all of the Stadium seats at a cost of approximately $17,500,000 over a three-year period; and

WHEREAS, the Stadium parking lot is also in need of repair and is expected to cost the State approximately $6,000,000; and

WHEREAS, with proper maintenance, the Stadium is expected to serve the public for another 10 to 15 years, if not longer; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) is requested to conduct a study on the cost of maintaining the Stadium; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the study include a report on current revenue sources for the Stadium; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that DAGS is requested to report its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than 20 days before the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Stadium Authority and the Comptroller of DAGS.
