HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to emergency services.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the Hawaii poison hotline is part of a national poison prevention network that connects the public directly to specially trained pharmacists and nurses to help manage poison exposure and answer poison related questions twenty-four hours a day. Currently, the hotline receives twelve thousand calls a year. Through the hotline, the staff is able to provide early management of poisoning cases, preventing the need of an emergency services visit or response. Additionally, the hotline provides professional toxicology consultative services twenty-four hours a day at no charge to hospitals, other acute care health facilities, and health care providers.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the department of health for the Hawaii poison hotline.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $200,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the Hawaii poison hotline.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of health for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
