Report Title:

After-school program; Keaau Middle School

Description:

Appropriates funds for an after-school program at Keaau Middle School.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

1016

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2003

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to after-school programs.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that there are very few activities offered to middle school students throughout Hawaii. This problem is particularly acute in the Keaau school complex where the elementary and high schools offer an array of activities after school hours, but the middle school only offers a few sports programs and very little else to its students.

The legislature further finds that transportation is not available to Hilo and Pahoa middle school students who do not yet drive, which forces most of them to immediately catch the school bus home after school. An after-school program would allow Keaau's middle school students to participate in many kinds of enrichment activities, and also provide work opportunities to local high school students.

Accordingly, the purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the department of education for an after-school program at Keaau middle school.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2003-2004 for an after-school program at Keaau middle school.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2003.
