HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING TAU MOE ON HIS LONG AND GLORIOUS CAREER AS HAWAIIAN MUSIC'S AMBASSADOR TO THE WORLD.

 

 

WHEREAS, TAU MOE, a true living treasure of Hawaii, was born in 1908 in a little village in German Samoa and grew up in La'ie; and

WHEREAS, TAU MOE went to La'ie Elementary School and then to McKinley High School where he became interested in professional music and learned to play the steel guitar that had been invented by his La'ie neighbor, Joseph Kekuku; and

WHEREAS, TAU MOE became so talented that, while still at McKinley he was chosen to replace his steel guitar teacher, Sol Ho'opi'i on a twenty seven day tour of Japan and the Orient; and

WHEREAS, TAU MOE had fallen in love with Rose Kaohu, who was a dancer and musician in an entertainment group known as Madame Riviere's Hawaiians that Tau and his uncles had joined; and

WHEREAS, TAU MOE and his beloved Rose then began a 54 year odyssey that took them around the world seven times, singing, dancing, raising two children, learning almost a dozen languages while performing in front of many world leaders before returning to La'ie in 1982; and

WHEREAS, TAU and Rose brought Hawaiian music to the ears of such people as Mohandas Ghandi, Adolf Hitler, Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, King Farouk of Egypt and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and shared stages with Josephine Baker and other notables; and

WHEREAS, TAU MOE is truly a legendary performer making his first record album in 1929 and many more through the years, winning the Library of Congress select list award for his 1989 recording of "Remembering the Songs of Our Youth"; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that it hereby honors, commends, and congratulates TAU MOE on his long and glorious career as Hawaiian Music's Ambassador to the world, bringing the beautiful sounds of the Moe family's voices and that of his steel guitar to people everywhere around the world.
