HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

HONORING AGNES PIGAO-CADIZ; SHIZU KAWAI; patti maxwell, bsn, rn; PATTI ERTEL, BSN, RN; DR. CHARON PIERSON; SHELBA CORTEZ, BSN, RN; AND ANA SILVA, BSN; FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NURSING PROFESSION.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Legislature is always proud to recognize and honor those outstanding individuals who share their time, energy, and talents to meet the challenging needs of the greater community; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii's health care professionals attend to the most vital needs of the people of our State by working tirelessly to help those who need medical assistance, as well as ensuring a healthier population by promoting healthy living and providing preventive care; and

WHEREAS, nurses are truly the most important members of Hawaii's health care community, as they perform the majority of treatment in our hospitals and clinics, and provide numerous indispensable medical functions in areas as diverse as general bedside care and surgery; and

WHEREAS, each year, the Hawaii Nurses Association (HNA) recognizes the achievements of several nurses in Hawaii from many different areas of nursing who have made a particularly strong contribution to their profession through their dedication, perseverance, and excellence of care; and

WHEREAS, AGNES PIGAO-CADIZ, BSN, is recognized for her thoughtfulness, honor, and grace in the face of any challenge, being a positive motivating force in our community and the community at large, her active involvement on the HNA Emergency Preparedness Committee, the HNA Congress of Nursing Practice, and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Constituent Assembly, and contributions as a Red Cross volunteer; and

WHEREAS, SHIZU KAWAI, MS, was nominated by the residents of One Kalakaua who recognize her as caring and compassionate to their community, and a motivating force that effected positive change who stood for her beliefs related to their Assisted Living and Wellness Program and demonstrated commitment to the profession of nursing; and

WHEREAS, PATTI MAXWELL, BSN, RN, is a Telemetry Nurse at Kaiser Permanente, dedicated to her patients and colleagues, who has made a difference in patient's lives and in the lives of new graduate nurses; and

WHEREAS, PATTI ERTEL, BSN, RN, a staff nurse at Kona Hospital tackled the role of an Oncology Specialist/Chemotherapy Nurse, which required gaining a great deal of essential knowledge in a short amount of time, is loved by her patients and is an excellent preceptor for new-graduate nurses; and

WHEREAS, DR. CHARON PIERSON promotes excellence in nursing practice by increasing peer awareness of nursing research and by encouraging its active utilization, serves as the editor of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Journal and former editor of Nursing Forum, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; and

WHEREAS, SHELBA CORTEZ, BSN, RN, is the Nurse Manager of the Kona Hospital Medical Surgical Unit who is not just a manager, but also a leader, and has made a marked difference to employee morale and unit efficiency; and

WHEREAS, ANA SILVA, BSN, has served on virtually every committee within HNA, teaches a medical terminology course and donates the proceeds to HNA District 7, worked tirelessly for HNA for many years including as a delegate to the HNA House of Delegates since 1993, a state delegate to the ANA House of Delegates since 1995, a member of the Continuing Education Committee, a member and chair of the Hawaii Nurses Political Action Committee, a member of the HNA Ethics Committee, and as HNA President from 1996-1998; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2003, that this body hereby honors and recognizes the notable achievements of the 2002 Hawaii Nurses Association award recipients: AGNES PIGAO-CADIZ, BSN, Nurse of the Year; SHIZU KAWAI, MS, Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year; PATTI MAXWELL, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse of the Year; PATTI ERTEL, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse of the Year; DR. CHARON PIERSON, Nurse Educator of the Year; SHELBA CORTEZ, BSN, RN, Nurse Administrator of the Year; and ANA SILVA, BSN, Ruth Kemble Award for Volunteer Service, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
