congratulating JIM NABORS for his outstanding performance talents, community involvement and entertainment abilities.
WHEREAS, Jim Nabors
is an entertainer of international status whose ability to combine the charm of a sophisticated modern country gentleman with the ingenuousness of a traditional country cousin has made him one of America's most beloved personalities; andWHEREAS, blessed with a quick wit and a rich classical baritone, Jim's natural talents as a character actor were discovered when he portrayed "Gomer Pyle" in a guest appearance on the Andy Griffith Show; and
WHEREAS, "Gomer" became a series regular and later the star of his own show "Gomer Pyle USMC"; and
WHEREAS, JIM NABORS later starred as the host of "The Jim Nabors Hour", and gave television audiences across the country the opportunity to learn what Las Vegas audiences had known for years, that JIM NABORS is a sophisticated and multi talented entertainer in his own right; and
WHEREAS, JIM NABORS' unique career has included all aspects of the entertainment industry and earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991; and
WHEREAS, rarely has a performer had a number one rated situation comedy, a top ten variety show, a talk show and several television specials, a recording career, acted in movies for the big screen and television, performed in stage productions and innumerable concerts; and
WHEREAS, JIM NABORS has recorded twenty eight albums and numerous singles and has garnered five gold and one platinum record; and
WHEREAS, after becoming a permanent Hawaii resident thirty years ago, JIM NABORS embarked on a successful two-year engagement at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, where his lavish "The Jim Nabors Polynesian Extravaganza" played to capacity audiences nightly; and
WHEREAS, JIM NABORS has worked untiringly for this community, contributing generously to nonprofit organizations, and sharing his talents with the Honolulu Symphony and Hawaii Theatre; and
WHEREAS, on August 9, 2001, Marine Commandant Gen. James L. Jones pinned lance-corporal chevrons onto the collars of JIM NABORS; and
WHEREAS, as Pvt. Gomer Pyle, JIM NABORS brought to life a compassionate character who demonstrated that there is more to a Marine than just battlefield prowess and Pyle, who was honest to a fault and always put the welfare of others first, revealed to the American viewing public the humanitarian aspect of being a Marine; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, congratulates JIM NABORS for
outstanding performance talents, community involvement and entertainment abilities and offers its best wishes to his future endeavors.
