THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

788

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2001

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT STIPENDS FOR TEACHERS.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Teachers are required to take career development courses for college credits in order to be relicensed as a teacher. However, the legislature finds that there may be cases of financial hardship that unintentionally prevent teachers from taking these courses and remaining licensed. Because of this, otherwise capable teachers are unable to remain licensed, making the students and the classrooms the ultimate victims.

The purpose of this Act is to provide stipends for teachers who, due to financial hardships, are unable to take the required career development courses.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, to provide stipends for teachers unable to afford the required career development courses.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
