HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING CYNTHIA HAGINO, LINDA MORIKONE, AND ALISON TANAKA AS THE 2000 RECIPIENTS OF THE DISTINGUISHED MILKEN FAMILY FOUNDATION NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARDS.

 

WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii take great pride in recognizing and honoring the superb achievements and notable contributions of educators who, through their extraordinary dedication and personal efforts, significantly improve the quality of education for the students of this State; and

WHEREAS, the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards, established in the State of Hawaii in 1990, elevate the standards of public education by providing recognition and financial rewards to outstanding kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers, principals, and other education professionals; and

WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards are presented to those educators who have made exemplary and innovative use of educational technology in teaching and learning, implemented innovative educational curricula and teaching programs, and demonstrated the exceptional ability to instill character and self-confidence in students, the ability to integrate children's understanding of education with "real world" activities, commitment to professional development and policy leadership in their schools, their districts, and the State, and strong potential for an even greater contribution to children, the teaching profession, and the community; and

WHEREAS, for the 1999-2000 school year, three outstanding educators -- CYNTHIA HAGINO, LINDA MORIKONE, and ALISON TANAKA -- have been honored for their extraordinary efforts, and have displayed initiative, creativity, and productivity within their respective schools; and

WHEREAS, CYNTHIA HAGINO, the Technology Coordinator at Waialua Elementary School has helped transform Waialua into a technologically literate community, and has also been an innovative leader, tireless worker, and an inspiring role model whose vision has led to school initiatives such as arranging a videoconference for her first grade "Entomology Academy" with a local entomologist, and teaching the students in her "Hydroponics Academy" to conduct research on the Internet and create their own web page; and

WHEREAS, LINDA MORIKONE, a distinguished teacher committed to teaching gifted and talented students at Noelani Elementary School in Manoa, continues to demonstrate her belief that high quality teaching and learning will lead to high achievement for all students by taking leadership roles in the school curriculum and engaging her students in project-based learning activities, and has also been instrumental in writing and receiving grants worth more than five hundred thousand dollars, enabling Noelani Elementary School to expand its technological resources and to provide expert professional development for its teachers; and

WHEREAS, ALISON TANAKA, recognized for her exceptional teaching ability and selfless dedication to her students, believes in the worth of children and in their ability to reach their highest potential and exceed their own expectations, and enriches the learning environment for her students by integrating project-based lessons that stimulate her students' curiosity in her lessons and foster lifelong learning habits; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body hereby commends and congratulates CYNTHIA HAGINO, LINDA MORIKONE, and ALISON TANAKA as the recipients of the Distinguished Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards for the 1999-2000 school year; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Milken Family Foundation National Education Awards Program is commended for its support and generosity in recognizing extraordinarily innovative and committed educators in Hawaii's public schools, thereby elevating the standards of teaching and education throughout the State of Hawaii.
