RESOLUTION
CONDEMNING THE CONTINUING VIOLENCE IN SUDAN.
WHEREAS, the African country of Sudan has been in a state of civil war for most of the forty five years since gaining independence from Great Britain in 1956; and
WHEREAS, Sudan is currently embroiled in the eighteenth year of a brutal civil war that has claimed over two million lives and left four million people homeless; and
WHEREAS, the Sudanese civil war stands as a testament to the savageness and depravity of mankind as forced starvation, kidnapping, rape, mutilation, torture, slavery, untreated disease, and child conscription are commonplace; and
WHEREAS, foreign investors in Sudan and their host countries from Europe and Asia have ignored the Sudanese civil war and its dire consequences on the native populace; and
WHEREAS, the highest officials in the United State federal government have focused on ending the Sudanese civil war as a foreign policy priority; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body is requested to condemn the continuing violence in Sudan by passage of this resolution; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, each member of Hawaii's Congressional delegation, and the President of the United States of America.
