The briefing will include presentations by grantees of Hawai'i Head Start and Early Head Start programs statewide. The goal of Head Start is to help low income families break the cycle of poverty by improving the health and social competence of preschool children and promoting economic self-sufficiency for parents.

Purpose: The briefing is to increase legislator’s, Board of Education and the public’s awareness of Hawai'i’s Head Start Members and Early Head Start Programs, its impact on children and families, and recommendations for enhancement of comprehensive services.

Outcomes: • Funding for full day/full year services.

• Additional DOE facilities/inclusion programs.

• Comprehensive health services in place for pregnant women and children.

• A comprehensive and coordinated family literacy system of support and resources in place.

• A comprehensive and coordinated process in place for the transition of children and families from Head Start to the public school systems.
