STAND. COM. REP. NO. 2206

                                   Honolulu, Hawaii
                                                     , 2000

                                   RE: S.B. No. 2832

Honorable Norman Mizuguchi
President of the Senate
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 2000
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Education and Technology, to which was
referred S.B. No. 2832 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO SCHOOL LUNCH,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this bill is to set the price of school lunch
in proportion to the total cost of operating the school food
services program and to allow the Department of Education to
adjust the price to maintain this proportion.

Testimony in favor of the measure was submitted by the
Department of Education.

The current law allows the Department of Education to
increase the school lunch price to a maximum of $1. By amending
the law to reinstate the 1993 formula to set the price of the
school lunch in proportion to the cost of the school lunch, the
Department of Education can ensure that the moneys received from
the sale of school lunches reflect the changing cost of preparing
school lunches.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your
Committee on Education and Technology that is attached to this
report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose
of S.B. No. 2832 and recommends that it pass Second Reading and
be referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.
