                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO TEACHERS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to extend the sunset
 
 2 date for the Hawaii teacher standards board.
 
 3      SECTION 2.  Section 302A-501, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 4 amended by amending subsection (b) to read as follows:
 
 5      "(b)  For the purposes of sections 302A-801 to 302A-808:
 
 6      "Board" means the Hawaii teacher standards board.
 
 7      "Credential" means an emergency or temporary license issued
 
 8 under this chapter based on standards and guidelines set by the
 
 9 board.
 
10      "License" means the document signifying the board's grant of
 
11 permission to practice the profession of teaching.
 
12      "Teacher" means an employee of the department paid under the
 
13 salary schedule contained in the unit 5 collective bargaining
 
14 agreement.
 
15      This subsection is repealed on June 30, [2000.] 2003."
 
16      SECTION 3.  Section 302A-809, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
17 amended to read as follows:
 
18      "[[]�302A-809[]]  Repeal.  This subpart [D, sections
 
19 302A-801 to 302A-809,] is repealed on June 30, [2000.] 2003."

 1      SECTION 4.  Act 122, Session Laws of Hawaii 1996, is amended
 
 2 by amending section 7 to read as follows:
 
 3      "SECTION 7.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval,
 
 4 except that section 2 shall take effect retroactive to July 1,
 
 5 1995, and shall be repealed on June 30, [2000.] 2003."
 
 6      SECTION 5.  In appointing the members of the Hawaii teacher
 
 7 standards board in 1999, the governor may stagger the terms of
 
 8 the members, as provided in section 26-34, Hawaii Revised
 
 9 Statutes, as if these members were initially appointed.
 
10      SECTION 6.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
11 New statutory material is underscored.
 
12      SECTION 7.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
