                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

  HONORING "THE VOICE" OF RAINBOW SPORTS, JIM LEAHEY.



 1        WHEREAS, the voice of Jim Leahey is familiar to most
 2   Hawaii residents; and
 3   
 4        WHEREAS, for many residents, his voice is routinely heard
 5   inside their homes; and
 6   
 7        WHEREAS, many residents listen to his every word more
 8   intently than they listen to their loved ones, friends, or
 9   colleagues; and
10   
11        WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey has been acclaimed "The Voice" of
12   Rainbow Sports; and
13   
14        WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey is a home-grown talent, having been
15   born in Hawaii and graduated from St. Louis High School; and
16   
17        WHEREAS, he attended Chaminade University and the
18   University of San Francisco, where he received a Bachelor of
19   Arts degree; and
20   
21        WHEREAS, after a tour in the Navy, including a year in
22   Vietnam with the Third Marine Division, he attended the
23   University of Hawaii and obtained a Masters in Education in
24   1970; and
25   
26        WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey has been doing play-by-play
27   broadcasting of sporting events for over three decades; and
28   
29        WHEREAS, after teaching at James Campbell High School for
30   ten years, Mr. Leahey became the sports director at the CBS
31   affiliate, KGMB, for a six year stint; and
32   
33        WHEREAS, since 1984, he has been director of sports
34   programming for K5 "The Home Team"; and
35   
36        WHEREAS, each year K5 produces one-hundred and twenty live
37   broadcasts of University of Hawaii sporting events that are
38   shown within the State and on cable outlets on the mainland;

 1        WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey calls the play-by-play action for all
 2   televised University of Hawaii sports events, including
 3   football, men's and women's volleyball, men's and women's
 4   basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, and softball; and
 5   
 6        WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey's dedication and excellence as a
 7   sportscaster has earned him immense admiration and recognition
 8   by his peers; and
 9   
10          WHEREAS, Mr. Leahey has been awarded the Hawaii
11   Sportscaster of the Year nineteen times by the National
12   Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association; now, therefore,
13   
14          BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
15   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
16   of 2000, that this body recognizes "The Voice" of Rainbow
17   Sports, Mr. Jim Leahey, and acknowledges his peerless
18   dedication to his craft and his preeminence as a sportscaster;
19   and
20   
21          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body acknowledges and
22   extends its appreciation on behalf of the citizens of Hawaii to
23   Mr. Leahey for his contribution to the University of Hawaii
24   Athletics and to the many, many fans of Rainbow Sports; and
25   
26          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body congratulates Mr.
27   Leahey on his outstanding achievements and extends to him and
28   his wife Toni, children Kelly, Kathryn, and Kanoa and
29   granddaughter Malia, all the best wishes for the future; and
30   
31          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
32   Resolution be transmitted to Mr. Jim Leahey.
