                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION.


BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
 2 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1 or so much thereof
 
 3 as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000 and the sum of $1
 
 4 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2000-2001
 
 5 to limit class sizes for the elementary grades; provided that:
 
 6      (1)  Starting from the 1999-2000 school year, classes in
 
 7           grades kindergarten to two shall be no larger than
 
 8           twenty students for each full-time equivalent teacher
 
 9           position;
 
10      (2)  Starting from the 2000-2001 school year, classes in
 
11           grade three shall be no larger than twenty students for
 
12           each full-time equivalent teacher position; and
 
13      (3)  Starting from the 2001-2002 school year, classes in
 
14           grades four to six shall be no larger than twenty-six
 
15           students for each full-time equivalent teacher
 
16           position.
 
17      SECTION 2.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the
 
18 department of education for the purposes of this Act.
 
19      SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
