                    SENATE  CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION

  URGING THE STATE DEPARTMENTS OF HEALTH, AGRICULTURE, AND
    EDUCATION TO FURTHER ENCOURAGE CONSUMPTION OF FIVE OR MORE
    FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DAILY.


 1        WHEREAS, national health authorities recommend that
 2   Americans increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables
 3   to five to nine servings a day to promote good health and
 4   reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease; and
 5   
 6        WHEREAS, research shows that people who eat five or more
 7   servings of fruits and vegetables a day have half the risk of
 8   cancer as those who eat fewer fruits and vegetables; and
 9   
10        WHEREAS, fruits and vegetables promote good health because
11   they contain fiber and essential nutrients, including vitamins
12   and minerals, are low in fat and calories and contain no
13   cholesterol, and fruits and vegetables also contain
14   phytochemicals that may provide additional protection to reduce
15   the risk of cancer and heart disease; and
16   
17        WHEREAS, less than forty per cent of all American adults
18   eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and
19   vegetables a day, and only twenty-six per cent of children,
20   ages two through nineteen years, eat the recommended five or
21   more servings of fruits and vegetables a day; and
22   
23        WHEREAS, the state Department of Health is striving to
24   increase public awareness of the importance of eating five or
25   more servings of fruits and vegetables a day for better health;
26   and
27   
28        WHEREAS, increased consumption of locally grown fruits and
29   vegetables promotes a sustainable environment; now, therefore,
30   
31        BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twentieth Legislature
32   of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 1999, the House of
33   Representatives concurring, that the Legislature hereby urges
34   state agencies, including the Department of Health, the
35   Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Education, to
36   promote awareness of the importance of eating five or more
37   fruits and vegetables a day; and

 2        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
 3   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Health,
 4   the Chairperson of Agriculture, and the Superintendent of
 5   Education.
