                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING FRED, SAMUEL JR., AND KAMAKA
   HAWAII INC.

 1       WHEREAS, Hawaiian culture has fascinated and captured the
 2   imagination of people throughout the world, and the  ukulele
 3   which means "jumping flea" is synonymous with Hawaiian music;
 4   and
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, for most ukulele players, the name KAMAKA is the
 7   only name that matters, because since 1916, the KAMAKA family
 8   has been doing what it does best-making ukuleles for the world
 9   and Hawaii; and
10   
11       WHEREAS, of the fourteen ukulele makers in Honolulu before
12   World War II, only KAMAKA HAWAII INC. survived and continues to
13   prosper under SAMUEL KAMAKA's two sons-SAM JR. and FRED; and
14   
15       WHEREAS, the senior KAMAKA created the world famous
16   pineapple ukulele, using an oval shaped body instead of the
17   traditional figure eight; and 
18   
19       WHEREAS, SAMUEL KAMAKA JR. gave up a doctorate in
20   entomology to take over the family firm, and FRED KAMAKA joined
21   after retiring from the Army as a lieutenant colonel and a
22   Silver Star in Korea; and
23   
24       WHEREAS, SAMUEL KAMAKA JR. also created new designs of
25   ukuleles to produce different sounds and moods, including the
26   multiple string, double octave ukulele and the bell-shaped
27   Ohta-San for picking purposes; and
28   
29       WHEREAS, KAMAKA HAWAII, INC. has won many awards for the
30   quality of its ukulele and for its policy of hiring the
31   physically challenged who make up half of the current twenty
32   workers; now, therefore,

 2       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 3   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
 4   of 1999, that this body recognizes and congratulates the sons
 5   and children of SAMUEL KAMAKA SR., specifically SAMUEL KAMAKA
 6   JR. and FRED KAMAKA, for continuing their father's work in
 7   making fine ukuleles esteemed throughout the world and thus
 8   preserving Hawaiian culture and contributing to world music.
