                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE  MILITARY ASSISTANCE TO SAFETY AND
   TRAFFIC PROGRAM.



 1       WHEREAS, the  MILITARY  ASSISTANCE  TO  SAFETY  AND TRAFFIC
 2   PROGRAM (MAST) is an  interagency  effort among the Departments
 3   of Transportation (DOT),  Health  (DOH),  Human Services (HDS),
 4   and Defense (DOD); and
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, each year, the MAST Program saves the State over a
 7   million  dollars,  besides  the   cost   of  the  purchase  and
 8   maintenance of a helicopter; and
 9   
10       WHEREAS, the MAST Program's  emergency services include on-
11   site  evacuation  of  accident  victims,  transfer  of critical
12   patients between hospitals,  and  transportation of key medical
13   personnel, blood, and organs; and
14   
15       WHEREAS,  the  68th  Medical   Company  has  nine  UH-60  A
16   Helicopters, each with a crew of  two pilots, a crew chief, and
17   medic,  which  provides  24-hour  rescue  support  to  both the
18   military and  civilian  communities,  and  as  Oahu's  only air
19   rescue rotor wing evacuation agency,  in 25 years, this program
20   has provided life-saving services at  no cost to the State when
21   each minute of an emergency situation is critical; and
22   
23       WHEREAS, the Army's 68th Medical Company conducts more than
24   300  medical  evacuation  missions  a  year  to  support  these
25   islands, and has transported over 6,000 patients in its 25-year
26   partnership with the State; now, therefore,
27   
28       BE IT  RESOLVED  by  the  House  of  Representatives of the
29   Twentieth Legislature of the  State  of Hawaii, Regular Session
30   of 1999, that  this  body  hereby  recognizes  and commends the
31   MILITARY ASSISTANCE TO SAFETY  AND  TRAFFIC PROGRAM for serving
32   the  emergency  and  health  care  needs  of  the  military and
33   civilian communities, and  expresses  its sincere gratitude and
34   aloha to those who service this important program.
