                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

  HONORING AND COMMENDING THE HAWAII STATE COMMISSION ON THE
    STATUS OF WOMEN FOR ITS WORK AND COMMITMENT TOWARD
    IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
 


 1        WHEREAS, the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of
 2   Women was established by executive order in 1964 by Governor
 3   John Burns, and made permanent in 1970 by the State
 4   Legislature; and
 5   
 6        WHEREAS, the mission of the Hawaii State Commission on the
 7   Status of Women is to ensure equality for women and girls in
 8   the State by acting as a catalyst for change through advocacy,
 9   education, collaboration, and program development; and
10   
11        WHEREAS, the Commission is a strong advocate for women's
12   issues and promotes and facilitates community leadership,
13   mobilization, and collaboration; and
14   
15        WHEREAS, the Commission addresses a wide range of issues,
16   including education, employment, economics, health care, and
17   social, political, and legal issues through its effective
18   public-private partnerships and networking with diverse boards,
19   coalitions, and professional and community groups and
20   organizations; and
21   
22        WHEREAS, the Commission facilitates and co-chairs the
23   Hawaii Women's Coalition, developing a package of legislative
24   initiatives every year in conjunction with the Hawaii Women's
25   Caucus and advocating and mobilizing community support for the
26   measures; and
27   
28        WHEREAS, the Commission is an integral part of the
29   Violence Prevention Curriculum Initiative, an educational
30   program directed at school children; the Na Wahine Team, which
31   ensures that Hawaii has a comprehensive identification and
32   treatment response to instances of violence against women; the
33   Domestic Violence Family Court Monitoring Project; and the Ad-
34   Hoc Committee on Domestic and Sexual Violence, which will
35   design and implement a comprehensive dna coordinated effort to
36   protect women and children; and

 1        WHEREAS, the Commission initiated and continues to
 2   spearhead Women's Health Month, which hosts hundreds of events
 3   throughout the State in the month of September to maximize
 4   public awareness of women's health issues and educate women
 5   about health issues; and
 6   
 7        WHEREAS, in 1998, the Commission established a website to
 8   serve as a clearinghouse for women's data in Hawai'i; now,
 9   therefore,
10   
11        BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
12   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
13   of 1999, that the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of
14   Women is commended and honored for its past, ongoing, and
15   future work benefitting the women and girls of this State; and
16   
17        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
18   Resolution be transmitted to Commissioners Leslie Wilkins,
19   Pamela Ferguson-Brey, Naomi Fujimoto, Edean Kam, Val Kanuha,
20   Haaheo Mansfield, and Mary Jo Sweeney, and Executive Director
21   Allicyn Hikida Tasaka.
