                     HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE FOUR HONOREES OF THE 22ND ANNUAL YWCA OF OAHU
   LEADER LUNCHEON PROGRAM.




 1      WHEREAS, since 1900 the YOUNG WOMENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
 2 of Oahu has been empowering women through education, employment
 3 training, esteem building, family support services, housing
 4 assistance, wellness classes and the elimination of racism, by
 5 responding to the changing needs of women and creating
 6 opportunities for them to grow; and
 7 
 8      WHEREAS, the YWCA Outstanding Achievement Awards Program
 9 began twenty-two years ago to acknowledge the accomplishments of
10 outstanding women in our community who have achieved a
11 distinguished level of excellence in their respective fields and
12 serve as role models for young women and to also acknowledge the
13 contributions of various institutions toward the betterment of
14 women in Hawaii; and
15 
16      WHEREAS, Maile Meyer is committed to improving the condition
17 of her fellow Hawaiians, having founded Native Books and
18 Beautiful Things, a business cooperative which is run using
19 Hawaiian cultural practices, and Native Books, Inc., which
20 distributes educational materials about Hawaii and the Pacific
21 and assists first-time publishers, writers and illustrators to
22 develop manuscripts on native Hawaiian themes; and
23 
24      WHEREAS, Kitty Lagareta is the President and Chief Executive
25 Officer of Communications-Pacific, Inc., one of the oldest and
26 largest public relations and marketing companies in Hawaii, she
27 also spearheaded the establishment of Hawaii's Ronald McDonald
28 House for seriously ill children and their families and the
29 Hawaii Industry Venture to provide AIDS/HIV information in the
30 workplace; and
31 
32      WHEREAS, Jo Ann Moe is an unsung heroine to the thousands of
33 Hawaiian youngsters and their families who participate in
34 organized youth sports each weekend, having established, nurtured
35 and guided youth soccer in Hawaii and, as a coach for boys and
36 girls soccer teams at both Punahou School and in the community,
37 demonstrated honesty, integrity, and a genuine concern for the
38 overall well-being of her athletes; and
39 
40      WHEREAS, Sacred Hearts Academy has succeeded in providing a

 1 socially relevant and academically challenging curriculum while
 2 giving its young women a strong base of Catholic values preparing
 3 them for the pivotal and influential roles they will play as
 4 adult women in society; now, therefore,
 5 
 6      BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 7 Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of
 8 1999, that this body extends its heartfelt congratulations and
 9 thanks to Maile Meyer, Kitty Lagareta, Jo Ann Moe and Sacred
10 Hearts Academy for achieving recognition from the YWCA
11 Outstanding Achievement Award Program and wishes them continued
12 success in all their future endeavors.
