                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS AS THE
   1998 PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR BY THE HAWAII MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
   ALLIANCE.



 1       WHEREAS, service to humanity is a noble profession as shown
 2   by certain individuals who possess this valuable service
 3   throughout our State; and
 4   
 5       WHEREAS, DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS has been named as the
 6   1998 Physician of the Year by the Hawaii Medical Association
 7   Alliance; and
 8   
 9       WHEREAS, in 1974, DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS arrived in
10   Hawaii from South Africa and determined in her support for
11   fairness and justice, projected to lend her voice for the
12   humanitarian rights and concerns of all people; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, exemplified by this deep and personal concern,
15   especially for for the welfare for the needy, this caring
16   individual, studied at the Integrated Pediatric Residency
17   Program and Pulmonary Fellowship at the John A. Burns School of
18   Medicine, where she later became an assistant professor of
19   pediatrics, achieved a Master's Degree in Public Health from
20   the School of Public Health at the University of Hawaii, served
21   as medical director of the Pediatrics Pulmonary Center at
22   Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, and has
23   continued to display her deep and personal commitment to the
24   principles of health and education by working closely with the
25   people in her community and abroad; and
26   
27       WHEREAS, DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS began a private practice
28   in 1979, serving the Wahiawa community, remains as one of the
29   few practicing pediatricians in this rural community, and
30   continues to treat low and middle income families; and
31   
32       WHEREAS, through her constant concern for patients' rights,
33   DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS sought to further her skills by
34   studying at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the
35   University of Hawaii in 1994, where she acquired the legal
36   knowledge necessary that make for an effective public advocate
37   in representing the rights of both patients and colleagues; and

 1       WHEREAS, in her continued effort to seek more economical
 2   means in health care, DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-MEYERS founded the
 3   Hawaii Coalition of Health as a means for providing health care
 4   consumers with an effective means of protecting patients'
 5   rights in finding and receiving the best quality health care
 6   available; now, therefore,
 7   
 8       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 9   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
10   of 1999, that this body hereby commends DR. ARLEEN JOUXSON-
11   MEYERS for the noteworthy efforts in her professional and civic
12   contributions of service in the field of Health, congratulates
13   her as the recipient of the 1998 Physician of the Year Award by
14   the Hawaii Medical Association Alliance, and extends to her its
15   warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all
16   future endeavors.
