                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO HAWAIIAN FISHPONDS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that Hawaii's fishponds
 
 2 hold a position of unique historical, cultural and economic
 
 3 significance, and have played a significant role in Hawaii's
 
 4 history. As economic and political resources, fishponds have
 
 5 contributed to the historical heritage of the people of Hawaii
 
 6 and form an important link to the past.  The purpose of this Act
 
 7 is to authorize the department of land and natural resources to
 
 8 transfer government-owned fishponds to the office of Hawaiian
 
 9 affairs. 
 
10      SECTION 2.  Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, the
 
11 department of land and natural resources shall be authorized to
 
12 convey fee simple interest on government-owned fishponds to the
 
13 office of Hawaiian affairs.
 
14      SECTION 3.  Consideration for the conveyance shall be
 
15 determined in the negotiations between the department of land and
 
16 natural resources and the office of Hawaiian affairs. 
 
17      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
