                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE TRAFFIC CODE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to increase the
 
 2 assessment that is imposed when a penal summons is issued.  The
 
 3 amount of the assessment has remained unchanged for many years
 
 4 and it is appropriate to review the efficacy of the current
 
 5 assessment.
 
 6      SECTION 2.  Section 291C-161, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 7 amended by amending subsection (d) to read as follows:
 
 8      "(d)  The court may assess a sum not to exceed [$25] $50 for
 
 9 the cost of issuing a penal summons upon any person who fails to
 
10 appear at the place within the time specified in the citation
 
11 issued to the person for any traffic violation."
 
12      SECTION 3.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
13 New statutory material is underscored.
 
14      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
