The purview of this committee includes those programs relating to economic development, and other emerging industries development; financial and technical assistance to business; film and digital media production; astronomy, biochemistry, biomedicine, biotechnology and other scientific research and development activities; culture and arts; historic preservation; use of information storage, transmissions, processing and telecommunications; recreation including commercial ocean recreation activities, sports and athletics, and the Aloha Stadium.
Session 2009 Highlights
During the 2009 Regular Session, the Committee on Economic Development and Technology focused on measures to spur increased growth in jobs and economic activity, and scrutinized tax incentives closely to assure that their "benefits" outweighed their "costs". The Senate and House economic development committees held two joint informational briefings that yielded extensive testimony on Hawaii's technology tax incentives, commonly known as "Act 221".
