A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO OXYBENZONE.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 328, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§328-    Sunscreen; oxybenzone; advertising or display requirements.  (a)  All advertisements or displays for sunscreen containing oxybenzone in the State shall include the following conspicuously displayed statement:  "Product contains chemicals which may harm coral reefs."

     (b)  For purposes of this section, "oxybenzone" means the chemical (2-Hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-phenylmethanone under the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry chemical nomenclature registry, which has a chemical abstract service registry number 131-57-7, and includes benzophenone-3 and 4-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone (trade names Escalol 567, Eusolex 4360, KAHSCREEN BZ-3, and Milestab 9) and is intended to be used as a sunscreen to provide broad-spectrum ultraviolet coverage."
     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on January 28, 2081.

Description:

Requires advertisements or displays for sunscreen containing oxybenzone in the State to include a conspicuously displayed statement that the sunscreen product contains chemicals which may harm coral reefs.  (HB818 HD1)
