TWENTY-NINTH LEGISLATURE, 2018

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR public EDUCATION.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that Hawaii's public schools are charged with making students college and career ready.  The legislature also finds that schools are being challenged to transform the ways in which they educate students in order to provide students with the skills and competencies needed to compete and succeed in an ever-changing globalized world.  Public school students must compete not only with other students statewide, but with students nationwide and globally.

The legislature recognizes that an effective public education system is one that offers world-class instruction through highly effective teachers and curricula.  To support student learning and student success, schools must be provided with adequate and increased funding to provide the resources necessary for student achievement.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the department of education for school-level funding to support student learning and student success.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $250,000,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for school-level funding.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
