A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to fire safety.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 46, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§46-    Fire retardant coatings or paint additives; use required.  Every county shall require that fire retardant coatings or paint additives be used on the interior finish of all new dwelling units and common areas of any building forty feet in height or taller.

     For the purposes of this section, "fire retardant coating or paint additives" means a brominated, phosphorous, nitrogen, chlorinated, inorganic, or similar flame retardant rolled, sprayed, or brushed on directly to interior finishes or added to paint that meets a ASTM International E84 Class A flame spread rating."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.
     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
