THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

1021

TWENTY-EIGHTH LEGISLATURE, 2015

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to historic preservation.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that Act 14, Session Laws of Hawaii 2011, requires that a state law enforcement memorial be constructed in the Capitol district.  This memorial will honor law enforcement officers from city, county, state, military, and federal agencies who have died in the line of duty, while serving the people of Hawaii.  The memorial, however, has yet to be constructed.

The purpose of this Act is to provide general funds to complete construction of a state law enforcement monument, which will perpetually pay tribute to those fallen officers who selflessly served the State to allow others to be free to live, work, play, and raise their families in safety and peace.

SECTION 2.  Act 14, Session Laws of Hawaii 2011, is amended by amending section 1 to read as follows:

"SECTION 1.  A state law enforcement memorial shall be constructed in the Capitol District, preferably on the Diamond Head side of the Kalanimoku building[; provided that private funds shall be solicited and used for the construction of the memorial]."

SECTION 3.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $250,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2015-2016 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2016-2017 for construction of the state law enforcement memorial.

The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of accounting and general services for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken.

SECTION 5.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2015.
