HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

Requesting the Board of education to establish a life skills education program at each public school for students IN kindergarten through twelfth grade.

 

 


     WHEREAS, many essential life skills, such as money management, budgeting, saving, and investing; preparation for independent living, learning how to be a renter, and learning how to own a home; information about being an entrepreneur; college preparation; and career education and advice on how to be successfully employed are not part of the current public school curriculum; and

 

     WHEREAS, there are a number of young people throughout the State who lack these essential life skills which are necessary to live independently, attend college, or enter the workforce; and

 

     WHEREAS, a person who lacks essential life skills is faced with obstacles and challenges that can make finding employment and housing difficult and may lead to homelessness or delinquency; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State to ensure that public school students are prepared to attend college, enter the workforce, live independently, and participate in the state economy upon leaving the public school system; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the Senate concurring, that the Board of Education is requested to establish and administer a life skills education program to be conducted at each public school for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the life skills education program be age appropriate and include courses designed to teach students life skills, including but not limited to:  money management, budgeting, saving, and investing; preparation for independent living, learning how to be a renter, and learning how to own a home; information about being an entrepreneur; college preparation; and career education and advice on how to be successfully employed; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Education.
