HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 12TH OF EVERY YEAR AS "CHARLES dARWIN DAY" IN HAWAII.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Charles Darwin, a naturalist, geologist, and arguably the most influential person in science, developed the then revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection, which has become the basic foundation for modern biology and ultimately for understanding the diversity of life on Earth; and

 

     WHEREAS, Darwin's theories were the beginning of a momentous change in the understanding of evolution that have led to significant strides in the field of science all over the world as well as here in Hawaii, where university programs and academic professionals have continued to make new advancements and developments in understanding the world, while also giving new meaning and insight into Darwin's vision; and

 

     WHEREAS, evolution has become so ingrained in our country's history that it is an accepted and necessary part of the reasoning in carrying out scientific research as well as in our understanding of society; and

 

     WHEREAS, the concept of evolution has profoundly impacted and furthered the survival of the human race by allowing researchers and scientists to make significant progress in the fields of science, technology, and medicine; and

 

     WHEREAS, Charles Darwin's legacy continues to influence and urge scientists, philosophers, and students to explore and develop new theories of mankind; and

 

     WHEREAS, the anniversary of Darwin's birthday is a time to reflect and celebrate the importance of his scientific achievements and recognize the new theories and advancements in evolution that have developed from Darwin's ideas and philosophy; and

 

     WHEREAS, the teachings and philosophy of Charles Darwin are the cornerstone of natural sciences; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2014, that this body recognizes "Charles Darwin Day" on February 12 of each year to celebrate all of Charles Darwin's achievements in the field of science; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
