A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to the hamakua water system.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $9,000,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009-2010 for a grant-in-aid to the county of Hawaii for the improvement of the Hamakua water system.  The project shall consist of outfitting of an existing Ahualoa well with a pump and motor; controls; electrical and site work; a water tank; and a required transmission waterline to supply drinking water to the Honokaa area.  This project will address increasing demand for additional water that is being driven by new and proposed state projects, including the University of Hawaii and Honokaa Hospital projects, and the development of elderly and affordable housing within the immediate area.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 2.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2009.
