HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the Public utilities Commission to not allow young brothers, LTD., to discontinue less-than-container-load shipping to and from Maui, molokai, and lanai.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, interisland cargo service is a vital lifeline for the islands of Hawaii, particularly the neighbor islands; and

 

     WHEREAS, Young Brothers, Ltd. (Young Brothers), operates the state's largest interisland cargo shipping service; and

 

     WHEREAS, reliable, affordable, convenient interisland cargo service is essential to the economy of the State and the welfare of its people; and

 

     WHEREAS, Young Brothers has petitioned the Public Utilities Commission for approval to eliminate less-than-container-load interisland cargo service to and from Maui, Molokai, and Lanai; and

 

     WHEREAS, current customers of Young Brothers on those islands, especially farmers and ranchers on Molokai, have expressed grave concerns about the effects of Young Brothers' plans on their economic future, including fears of being unable to continue business, if less-than-container-load shipping is discontinued; and

 

     WHEREAS, a thriving agriculture industry is crucial to the State, and any threat to the longevity of Hawaii's farmers and ranchers on the neighbor islands is a threat to the economy of the State as a whole; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, the Senate concurring, that the Public Utilities Commission is urged to not allow Young Brothers, Ltd., to discontinue its less-than-container-load service to and from Maui, Molokai, and Lanai; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Public Utilities Commission, the Consumer Advocate, and the Chief Executive Officer of Young Brothers, Ltd.
