A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

relating to emergency shelters.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 107, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section in part II to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§107-    Public buildings; emergency shelters.  Prior to the construction of any new state or county building that will contain more than ten thousand interior square feet or that will require the expenditure of more than $10,000,000 in state funds for its planning, design, and construction, the agency or agencies responsible for the project shall consult with the director of civil defense on the potential use of the building as an emergency shelter.  Upon a determination by the director of civil defense that:

     (1)  There is a need for additional emergency shelter space in the geographic area where the building is to be constructed; and

     (2)  The new building will be suitable for use as an emergency shelter;

the design and construction specifications for the building shall be modified, as needed, to meet the standards for an emergency shelter as established in the state building code or applicable county building code."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
