HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the united states postal service to issue a stamp honoring prince jonah kuhio kalanianaole.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was born on March 26, 1871, at Hoai, Kualu in the Koloa district of the island of Kauai; and

 

     WHEREAS, he was the last prince of the Hawaiian monarchy upon the demise of his brother David Kawananakoa and Queen Lydia Liliuokalani; and

 

     WHEREAS, in his early years, Prince Kuhio attended the best schools in England to prepare for high offices or to wear the crown upon his return to the Kingdom of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, upon his return, Prince Kuhio received a position in the Ministry of the Interior and the Customs Service where he showed a strong aptitude for public affairs; and

 

     WHEREAS, as a staunch supporter of his aunt, Queen Liliuokalani, he joined a group of revolutionaries with the intent of restoring her to the throne from the republic of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, he was later arrested for joining the Hawaiian revolution in 1895, charged with treason, and served a one-year sentence as a political prisoner; and

 

     WHEREAS, he was later released and pardoned, at the same time that Liliuokalani was released from her imprisonment; and

 

     WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio was elected to Congress and served from March 4, 1903 until his death in 1922; and

 

     WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio served on the Military Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives where he fought hard for the development of Pearl Harbor and secured millions of dollars for military installations on Oahu; and

 

     WHEREAS, on February 11, 1919, he introduced a bill in Congress asking that Hawaii be admitted to the United States; and

 

     WHREAS, in 1920, after years of lobbying, Prince Kuhio finally passed his greatest achievement, the Rehabilitation Act, better known as the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act; and

 

     WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio died on January 7, 1922, at the age of fifty, and was given the last state funeral held in Hawaii for an alii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that the United States Postal Service is requested to issue a commemorative stamp in honor of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the people of Hawaii are urged to support this effort to bring pride and recognition to both Prince Kuhio and the State of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer and the Chair of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee of the United States Postal Service, the District Manager of the United States Postal Service for the District of Hawaii, the Governor of Hawaii, the Mayors of Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii counties, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, the Honolulu-Pacific Federal Executive Board, and the principal of the Prince Jonah Kuhio elementary school.
