A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to child care.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 346, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part VIII read as follows:

"§346-A Reduction of risk of sudden infant death syndrome in child care facilities. (a) Within thirty days after the effective date of this section, the department of human services, after consultation with the department of health, shall establish a requirement that all child care providers, employees, and volunteers in a child care facility that provides care and supervision of children under one year of age shall receive current medically accepted training on reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

(b) At a minimum, the training shall address risk factors related to sudden infant death syndrome, means of reducing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome in child care facilities, and communications with parents regarding the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

(c) Training for child care facility licensees, employees, and volunteers shall be completed before the license is issued or the employment or volunteer work commences.

(d) Current license holders, their employees, and volunteers shall be required to meet the sudden infant death reduction training requirements no later than six months after the effective date of this section."

SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
