THE SENATE

S.R. NO.

109

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

SUPPORTING TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT AND BEAUTIFICATION AT THE INTERSECTION OF KUAKINI STREET AND LANAKILA AVENUE.

WHEREAS, over the years, the T-intersection at Keola Street-Lanakila Avenue, and Kuakini Street-Lanakila Avenue has been a source of safety concerns for the surrounding residents; and

WHEREAS, all alternative proposals for the use of the site have been opposed by residents and community groups; and

WHEREAS, the area is frequented by many pedestrians, school children, and senior citizens who have shown strong support for the completion of a standard four-leg intersection at Kuakini Street and Lanakila Avenue to address safety concerns; and

WHEREAS, residents' earlier extension efforts involved a much larger project; and

WHEREAS, a current proposal has been modified substantially to make it affordable and have the least possible impact on the surrounding area; and

WHEREAS, the power lines are already in place along the proposed roadway and Keola Street would be closed off at the Ewa end with no further changes to the street or the parking area; and

WHEREAS, the community also wishes to preserve a sense of open space by beautifying the adjacent area, creating an attractive gateway to Alewa Heights and Kamehameha Heights that would instill pride in a long-neglected neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, many facilities and institutions in the vicinity would benefit from this valuable safety improvement, including Lanakila Elementary School, Maluhia Hospital, the Weinberg Senior Residence, Lanakila Health Center, Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Lanakila District Park, St. Theresa's Parish and School, Higashi Hongwanji Mission, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Preschool, the Kuakini St. Fire Department, and other emergency units; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that this body supports the completion of a standard four-leg intersection at Kuakini Street and Lanakila Avenue; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Mayor Jeremy Harris, members of the Honolulu City Council, Theresa Russell, Chair of the Liliha-Kapalama Neighborhood Board, and Francis Nishimura, Chair of the Kuakini Street Extension Project Citizen's Group.
