Report Title:

National Korean War Museum; Appropriation

Description:

Appropriates funds to establish a National Korean War museum.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

2129

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

making an appropriation for a national korean war museum.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the establishment of a National Korean War Museum in Hawaii would significantly aid in economic development and increase tourism by attracting visitors from outside the State, especially those from Korea or who are veterans who live on the mainland. This would increase job creation, tourism dollars spent, and state and county tax revenue in Hawaii. As the State of Hawaii had the highest percentage of casualties from the Korean War, it is the most fitting place for a national museum.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the construction of a National Korean War Museum in Hawaii.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2002-2003, for the establishment of a National Korean War Museum in Hawaii; provided that for every State dollar appropriated, $2 in matching funds shall be obtained from the federal government, other sources, or a combination of both, shall be released until matching funds are obtained.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of business, economic development, and tourism for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2002.
