HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

1750

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to motor vehicle license plates.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Findings and purpose. The legislature finds that veterans' license plates are increasingly popular and bring in additional funds to support the licensing program. At the present time a veteran is required to choose only one war or campaign to be reflected on the license plate because it is permanently imprinted on the plate which otherwise does not provide enough space for those veterans who have served in more than one campaign. Veterans are proud of every year of their military service and would like the driving public to know that some of them have served over time, in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and other more recent campaigns in the Persian Gulf region. The purpose of this Act is to allow a veteran to indicate with a decal sticker, up to four different war or military campaign designations on a single license plate.

SECTION 2. Section 249-9.2, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by amending subsection (b) to read as follows:

"(b) The design of the plates for:

(1) Purple heart recipients shall include the words "COMBAT WOUNDED";

(2) Veterans shall include the word "VETERAN";

(3) Pearl Harbor survivors shall include the words "PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR";

(4) Former prisoners of war shall include the words "FORMER PRISONER OF WAR";

(5) Combat veterans shall include the words "COMBAT VETERAN";

(6) Veterans of the Vietnam conflict shall include the words "VIETNAM VETERAN";

(7) Veterans of the Korean conflict shall include the words "KOREA VETERAN";

(8) Veterans of World War II shall include the words "WORLD WAR II VETERAN"; and

(9) Veterans of the Persian Gulf conflict shall include the words "PERSIAN GULF VETERAN".

These designations shall be imprinted on the left side of the license plates in a manner similar to congressional and honorary consul license plates[.]; provided that in cases of multiple designations of wars, conflicts, or police actions, the director of finance may issue a decal for up to four category designations."

SECTION 3. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
