HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

EXPRESSING REGRETS AND SYMPATHY FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE TRAGEDY AT SEA WITH THE EHIME MARU AND THE U.S.S. GREENVILLE.

 

 

WHEREAS, education and providing educational experiences are highly valued by the citizens of Japan and Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, the Ehime Maru was on a mission to provide educational work-study experiences in Hawaiian waters for students from Uwajima Fisheries High School, one of forty-seven maritime schools in Japan; and

WHEREAS, the Ehime Maru was involved in a tragic accident involving the U.S.S. Greenville after leaving Honolulu Harbor; and

WHEREAS, despite heroic efforts to save everyone aboard the training vessel, four students, two teachers, and three crew members are missing and the reason for massive and urgent searches in the area of the accident; and

WHEREAS, parents, relatives, and school and government officials are in Hawaii, contemplating the fate of the ship's missing complement and searching for answers as to "how" and "why" such an accident could occur; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body extends its deepest regrets over the occurrence of the collision, the injuries suffered, and, along with its deepest sympathy, the apparent loss of nine students, teachers, and crew members of the Ehime Maru; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be sent to the representatives of the Japanese government, officials of Uwajima Fisheries High School, and the parents of students participating in the sea-going program.
