HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 2001 AS DRUG-FREE HAWAII AWARENESS MONTH AND ITS SPONSORS: DRUG-FREE HAWAII, HAWAII MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND LANDMARK ENTERTAINMENT/"MY TV."

 

 

WHEREAS, substance abuse is one of the most serious and preventable issues facing the state of Hawaii and the nation; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has estimated that the social and economic cost of substance abuse is more than $400 billion a year, including health care cost, lost worker productivity, and crime; and

WHEREAS, since 1996, studies of the use and prevalence of substance abuse among school-aged children in Hawaii have indicated a steady, continuing, and deeply troubling rise in the percentage of youth using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; and

WHEREAS, DRUG-FREE HAWAII, HAWAII MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND LANDMARK ENTERTAINMENT/"MY TV" in partnership with public and private agencies and organizations are sponsoring Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month in February with events to educate local residents about the effects of substance abuse in our communities, to celebrate drug-free, healthy lifestyles, and to motivate people to take action against substance abuse; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature recognizes February 2001 as Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month and its theme, "The Solution Is In Our Hands," and urges statewide citizen, governmental, and private sector participation and active support for its cause; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body hereby expresses its deepest mahalo and aloha to DRUG-FREE HAWAII, HAWAII MEDICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION, DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND LANDMARK ENTERTAINMENT/"MY TV" for their sponsorships and success in promoting Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month.
