Rep. Mark Moses Will Fly on Second C-17 to Arrive at Hickam
On an invitation from General Robert G.F. Lee, Rep. Mark Moses will be flying from California to Hickam Airforce Base on a C-17 aircraft. This will be the second C-17 - out of eight - to arrive in Hawaii.
"I'm honored that General Lee thought to include me in this deployment, which reflects the strategic importance Hawaii holds in the Pacific and in the global interests of the United States," says Rep. Moses.

Commentary

School Shelters Should Be Top Post-Disaster Priority
Click here to read Rep. Mark Moses' Honolulu Star Bulletin editorial emphasizing the importance of improving Hawaii's disaster preparedness. That many school buildings (including Kapolei High School) are not hurricane-resistant and therefore unusable as shelters is cause for great concern. The State Civil Defense estimates that there is insufficient space for 124,000 of Hawaii's residents.
"Now that Hurricane Katrina has again put disaster preparedness at the forefront of our minds, we should act soon to secure emergency shelters. Instead of raiding special funds in times of need, lawmakers should use a portion of the current surplus in the general fund to support the creation of more shelters."

Make Companies Liable for the Data Entrusted to Them
Click here to read the Honolulu Advertiser article containing Rep. Mark Moses' recommendations for reducing identity theft. The past few years have been filled with countless instances of companies accidentally and even intentionally providing clients' personal information to unauthorized entities that used the information for illegal purposes.
"Hawai'i has few laws in place to protect the collection, storage, selling and safeguarding of personal information, or requiring notification when data is lost. Our state needs stronger laws to protect individuals from the disclosure of personal information that makes the crime of identity theft possible."

"We should require companies to notify potential victims whenever the loss of personal information is detected or suspected, and to make those who accumulate and maintain databases containing personal information strictly liable to victims of identity theft resulting from the improper disclosure of personal information."

"Making companies strictly liable for the data entrusted to them is probably the most effective way to get businesses to be more responsible. Criminal sanctions may be appropriate where misconduct has occurred, or the lack of corporate responsibility and due diligence is egregious and flagrant."
Support of the Patriot Act is Crucial

The Patriot Act is an indispensable tool for "tearing down the bureaucratic red tape that, in years past, blocked communication between our law enforcement and intelligence." Click here to read the full press release by Rep. Moses.
