TOPICS OF INTEREST

  • High Technology Industry Task Force
As the Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Economic Development & Business Concerns, Representative Wakai is deeply interested in Hawaii's high technology industry. House Bill No. 3019, H.D. 1, would have helped to promote and sustain high technology in Hawaii through the establishment of a High Technology Industry Task Force to develop a master plan for high technology in the state. However, this measure failed to gain Senate approval.

  • Tobacco Products – Minors
Representative Wakai is a strong advocate for keeping Hawaii's youth drug-free. Together with his colleagues, he has introduced House Bill No. 3017, H.D. 2, which would have prohibited minors from using tobacco products. This measure also would have established penalties for smoking such as requiring attendance at a tobacco education program, community service, and suspension of driving privileges. However, this measure failed to gain Senate approval.

  • Emergency Shelters
Understanding the need to improve Hawaii's emergency shelters, Representative Wakai supports House Bill No. 2183, H.D. 1, which would have appropriated funds to retrofit public school facilities to enable them to be used as emergency shelters. However, this measure failed to gain legislative approval.
