Department of Land and Natural Resources

The official website of Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources, which is responsible for protecting, conserving, and managing Hawaii’s natural, cultural, and historic resources held in public trust for current and future generations of visitors and the people of Hawaii nei.   The site includes links to Administrative Rules implemented by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, websites of the 11 divisions, offices, and programs under the Department, an Online Document Search and Ordering System for documents recorded with the Bureau of Conveyances, and information on hunter education classes and hunting licenses, and Camping, Cabin, and Wedding Permits.  There is also a link to the Civil Resource Violation System to view the status of natural resource law violations cases.

 

Office of Planning

The official website of the state Office of Planning, which works to maintain an overall framework to guide the development of the State through a continuous process of comprehensive, long-range, and strategic planning to meet the physical, economic, and social needs of Hawaii's people, and provide for the wise use of Hawaii's resources in a coordinated, efficient, and economical manner.  Links to the Statewide Geographic Information System, Brownfields Assessment Program, and the Coastal Zone Management Program can be found here. Some of the data may require computer software capable of opening shapefiles.

 

Land Use Commission

The official website of the state Land Use Commission, which is responsible for establishing the district boundaries for the entire State and ruling on petitions for boundary changes submitted by private landowners, developers, and State and county agencies.   The website includes information on the various types of district boundaries--urban, rural, agricultural, and conservation--and links to Administrative Rules implemented by the Land Use Commission, as well as land use maps and rulings on petitions.

 

Legacy Land Conservation Program

Found on the Department of Land and Natural Resources website, this page provides background and application information on the Legacy Land Conservation Program, which provides grant funding for the acquisition of land resources that have value as a resource to the State.

 

State Register of Historic Places

This page on the State Historic Preservation Division's website provides listings of properties on the State Register of Historic Places by island.  Registration information and application forms for nominating properties to the Register can also be found on this page.

 

Hawaii Community Development Authority

The official website of the Hawaii Community Development Authority, which is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the redevelopment and revitalization of designated urban areas in the State--the Kakaako and Kalaeloa Community Development Districts.   The site provides links to Community Development District plans, rules, and draft rules, and information on Community Development Districts, such as public parking, road improvements, park facilities, affordable housing projects, and commercial, residential, and beautification projects.

 

Commission on Water Resource Management

The official website of the Commission on Water Resource Management, which is responsible for carrying out the State's constitutionally-mandated duty to set policies, protect resources, define uses, and establish priorities while assuring rights and uses, and establish regulatory procedures relating to surface and ground water resources.   Links to the Water Resource Protection Plan, State Water Projects Plan, Water Quality Plan, Agricultural Water Use and Development Plan, and County Water Use and Development Plans, and other information relating to water resources can be found on this site.

 

County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation

The website of the County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation providing information on county beach parks and camping facilities.

 

County of Maui Parks and Recreation

The website of the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation providing information on county parks and other recreational areas and services.

 

County of Kauai Parks and Recreation

The website of the County of Kauai Department of Parks and Recreation providing information on camping permits, and park, pool, golf, and other recreational facilities and programs.

United States Department of the Interior

The mission of the US Department of the Interior includes protecting the country's natural resources and heritage. The website includes links to bureaus and agencies within the the Department, including the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The site is news-heavy and includes program and contact information. Websites for the various bureaus include more detailed information specific to each bureau.

 

National Park Park Service

The Hawaii section of the National Park Service website, which lists information on the eight national parks located in Hawaii, including Volcanoes National Park.

 

Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Service

A listing of endangered and threatened species that can be found in the Pacific islands prepared by the Pacific Islands Fish and Wildlife Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

National Conference of State Legislatures

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that provides several services, including research and technical assistance for policymakers, to create a forum for the exchange of ideas on state issues. The website has various resources related to water, land use, and natural resources including bill summaries, newsletters, articles, and reports.

 

School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology

The official website of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (SOEST).  Students and faculty of SOEST research the ocean, Earth, and planets.  This website provides information on, or links to, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, the Sea Grant College Program, the City and County of Honolulu's beach hazard forecast site, and other programs relating to the state's ocean and marine resources.
