Department of Agriculture

The official website of Hawaii's Department of Agriculture, which provides services for importing and exporting plants and animals, agricultural and aquacultural development, pesticides, and plant pest control, among other services.  The site includes links to information on Important Agricultural Lands, vog, animal quarantine, and food safety.  There is also a list of Hawaii Farm Bureau Farmers' Markets and information on food self-sufficiency.

 

County of Hawaii Agriculture

Created to provide information and resource contacts for all agricultural products grown on Hawaii's Big Island, this website includes a list of frequently asked questions relating specifically to the agriculture industry on the Big Island, as well as information on various crops and agricultural methods and techniques.

 

Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation

According to the website, HFBF is a nonprofit organization of farming families united for the pupose of analyzing problems and formulating action to ensure the future of agriculture thereby promoting the well-being of farming and the state's economy.  The site includes information on HFBF-supported legislation, local farmers' markets, and HFBF committees.  There are also links to related information including transportation, Important Agricultural Lands, and the Enterprise Zone program.

 

College of Tropical Agriulture and Human Resources

CTAHR at the University of Hawaii supports tropical agriculture systems that foster viable communities, a diversified economy, and a healthy environment through research and educational programs. The website offers information for prospective students of the college and information on upcoming industry-related events, news, and publications, as well as international programs.

U.S. Department of Agriculture

According to their mission statement, the U.S. Department of Agriculture provides leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, and related issues based on sound public policy, the best available science, and efficient management.  Available information can be browsed by clicking on subject links, including "Agriculture," "Food and Nutrition," and "Rural and Community Development."  The site also includes a phytochemical database to find chemical structures, formulas, and molecular weights, among other information, as well as an Integrated Taxonomic Information System.

 

NOAA Aquaculture Program

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration promotes sustainable agriculture that will create employment and business opportunities, provide safe and sustainable seafood, and maintain healthy and productive marine populations and ecosystems. The website, among other things, explains what aquaculture is, details NOAA's operations, and provides a resource library.

 

Agricultural Research Service

ARS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency.  According to its mission statement, ARS conducts research to develop and transfer solutions to agricultural problems of high national priority and provide information access and dissemination for related purposes.  The site includes products and services such as educational resources, the National Agricultural Library, and publications including "Agricultural Research."  In addition, there is a collection of online datasets organized by broad topic areas, including "Chemistry and Biochemistry," "Food and Nutrition," "Genetics," "Germplasm," "Natural Resources," and "Systematics."

 

National Invasive Species Information Center

Part of the National Agricultural Library, this website was created and is managed to serve as a reference gateway to information, organizations, and services about invasive species. There are species profiles, discussion groups, and educational resources for aquatic species, plants, animals, and microbes. Information is state-specific.

National Conference of State Legislatures

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that provides several services, including research and technical assistance for policymakers, to create a forum for the exchange of ideas on state issues. The website has various agriculture-related information organized by issues and including bill summaries, reports, articles, and newsletters. The site also offers an Agriculture and Rural Development Database as a source for legislation for all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. territories, and links to relevant resources including research organizations, nonprofits, and federal agencies.

 

Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education

SARE is a program meant to help advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound, and good for communities through a nationwide research and education grants program.  SARE's national outreach office is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and operates under cooperative agreements with the University of Maryland and the University of Vermont to develop and disseminate information about sustainable agriculture.  The site contains a searchable database of grant projects and various publications on topics such as energy, soil management, economics and marketing, and crop production.

 

Farmer's Bookshelf

A project out of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, this site provides links to a wealth of agricultural information.  The site also includes links to local organizations including the Hawaii Coffee Association, Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative, and Hawaii Botanical Society.  Please note that some of these links may be outdated.

 

Hawaii Crop Improvement Association

HCIA is a nonprofit trade organization representing the seed industry in Hawaii. The website offers information on related issues, news, publications, and events.
